This letter is to clarify Parker Unified School District’s stance on wearable technology, in this case AI-enabled eyewear or ‘smart” glasses on school campuses. To ensure all students have the right to a safe learning environment, the District is clarifying that “smart” glasses, such as those with built-in cameras or recording capabilities fall under Governing Board Policy IJNDB Use of Technology Resources in Instruction, specifically the regulation and Wireless Communication Device Guidelines. Some examples of “smart” glasses are Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta Vanguard, Oakley Meta HSTN, and Meta Ray-Ban Display.
Under the current regulation, all personal electronic devices must be powered off and stored out of sight during the normal school day unless specific permission has been granted. While the District acknowledges that some “smart” glasses can be fitted with prescription lenses, students are not permitted to wear these devices during normal school hours. Students who wear corrective lenses must use standard, non-electronic eyewear during the normal school day.
Our goal is to protect the privacy of our students while keeping our classrooms free of digital distractions. Treating AI glasses the same as wireless communication devices not only makes sense, but in the long run protects our students from undue privacy issues.
Respectfully,
Brad Sale
