Lisa Olenick

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the new school year!  My name is Ms. Olenick and I will be your child’s teacher for the school year. This is my first full year here at Blake.  Last year I taught second grade from November through the end of the school year.  I graduated from California University of San Marcos, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. I went on to get my Masters of Education from Nation University in San Diego.  I am very excited to get the school year off and running.  This will be my 10th year of teaching.  Our year will be filled with community building, learning opportunities, and fun!  Our classroom environment will be full of support and encouragement.  I truly enjoy teaching energetic and enthusiastic second graders.

Your child will bring a Homework Folder home on Monday – the bright orange one. It will come home on Monday, August 20th. Inside you will find some important notes, homework, and work your child has completed.  Homework is sent home every Monday and is due on Fridays.  I believe homework teaches responsibility and better prepares them for the work they will have in 3rd grade. On some days, the folder may be empty, but it will be sent home as part of the routine.  Please check the Homework Folder nightly and return it to school the following day.  If you have any notes for me, the Homework Folder is a great place to put them.

It is very important that your child is at school and on time every day!  Second graders will receive approximately 10 grades on their first report card and over 50 grades by the end of the year.  We will be learning new concepts daily, and I don’t want him/her to fall behind due to absences and tardiness.

Use your Classroom Dojo codes to check your student’s behavior daily. If you need a new code just contact me and I will send one home.

The school provides everything your child will need for his/her work.  Please do not send extra supplies as they usually cause problems among the other students.  There are a few items that we will need in our classroom. I also included a school supply list.  Please send these in ASAP. If you can help by donating any item(s) listed below, it would be greatly appreciated!

o    Paper plates

o    Zip-lock baggies (all sizes)

o    Paper/plastic cups

o    Plastic spoons/forks

o    Hand sanitizer

o    Kleenex

o    Markers/ Colored Pencils

o    Disinfectant wipes

Studies have proven that when chosen properly, snacks can provide children with an extra boost to their mental skills. For this reason, your child will have a daily snack time in the morning in which he/she will be able to eat a healthy snack. We ask that you send a class snack about once a month. I send home the snack calendar for the classroom on a monthly basis. We have 22 students. Please send a small snack for each child that can be eaten in approx. 10 minutes. Also, please keep in mind that we will be eating in the classroom. Therefore, healthy snacks that have minimal clean-up are best!

Acceptable morning snacks include: crackers, pretzels, dry cereal, string cheese, raisins, fruit or veggies, etc... Please note that candy, soda, cakes, and greasy, or finger-coloring chips are not permitted. If you can not send a snack on your given day, please contact me ahead of time so arrangements for a snack can be made for that day.

I am excited to have the opportunity to work with your child.  If you ever have questions or concerns, please contact me at school or email me.  Thank you for an anticipated wonderful school year.
